Langley volunteered at Samaritan House in January. Samaritan House received a grant for $10,000 in Cycle 1.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – (April 22, 2022) – Langley for Families Foundation announced the grantees of its first giving cycle in 2022 – a total of $220,000 donated to 32 organizations.

One of the grantees from the first cycle is the Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation, which supports EVMS, its students, and its community impact initiatives. The grant will specifically support HOPES Free Clinic. In 2011, medical students recognized a growing need for healthcare within the uninsured population in Norfolk and responded by establishing a student-run free clinic, HOPES (Health Outreach Partnership of EVMS Students), to improve quality of life and accessibility to primary and specialty medical care.

As the only free clinic in Norfolk and the first student-run clinic in Virginia, HOPES serves 20-25 patients during two evening clinics per week, for a total of 1,000 uninsured adults residents served to date. The clinic is staffed by volunteer EVMS student clinicians, residents, and physicians who work together to provide patient-centered care.

“The HOPES Free Clinic aims to increase access to healthcare for underserved populations in Hampton Roads and to build leaders and improve the soft skills of EVMS’s students,” said Brooke Boothby, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at EVMS. “We’re thankful Langley recognizes the value of HOPES Free Clinic and its impact on the community.”

Grant awards focus on the Foundation’s three core program areas – access to education; housing & human services; and healthcare. The Foundation’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of families in all of the communities Langley serves, with an emphasis on providing most basic needs to those most in need.

Funds are raised from the generosity of Langley members, employees, partners, and the Hampton Roads community. Langley for Families Foundation hosts a monthly charitable cash raffle for a $20,000 prize. Tickets are only $20 and can be purchased at www.langleyforfamilies.org/raffle.

Langley for Families Foundation will host a total of three giving cycles in 2022, with the next deadline for application on August 17.
