2026 MLK Jr. Day of Service

Langley volunteers organized and refreshed the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in by clearing outdated inventory, sweeping and cleaning floors, and reorganizing key areas of the store—improving efficiency and supporting ongoing funding for affordable housing initiatives.
On Monday, January 19, over 220 Langley Federal Credit Union employees and family members volunteered at 15 nonprofit organizations on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in honor of the civil rights leader’s legacy of service. Volunteers completed a variety of service projects across Hampton Roads VA, Raleigh, NC, and Richmond, VA.
Since 2020, Langley has observed MLK Jr. Day as a Day of Service. With branches and offices closed, Langley encourages employees to give their time and talents to support the nonprofit community.
During the seventh annual event, Langley volunteers:
- fought food insecurity in Raleigh by sorting and packing 16,500 pounds of food at the Foodbank of Central & Eastern North Carolina—providing 13,750 meals for neighbors in need.
- organized, prepared and packed food donations at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore in Norfolk, filling 925 backpacks to support the Backpack Program – a program that will provide meals to students who face hunger over weekends and school breaks.
- painted three dental clinical rooms, an imaging area, and two administrative offices to refresh and improve the overall appearance of the environment at the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic in Gloucester.
- enhanced animal welfare at the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society by tidying dog trails, constructing a large cat enclosure, cleaning facilities, organizing medical supplies, completing laundry, and preparing enrichment items—supporting a safe, healthy environment for animals and staff.
- sorted and stored 1,500 lbs. of donated supplies, bagged 600 pieces of produce, divided 200 clothing items into small packs for distribution, and served 204 individuals at the free grocery market of Grove Christian Outreach Center in Williamsburg.

Langley volunteers organized, prepared and packed food donations at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore in Norfolk, filling 925 backpacks to support the Backpack Program – a program that will provide meals to students who face hunger over weekends and school breaks.
built exterior walls for two homes for Habitat for Humanity Peninsula & Greater Williamsburg that will be completed on lots in Newport News, providing local families with a meaningful path to homeownership. Three future homeowners worked alongside volunteers during the project, reinforcing the power of community as people from diverse backgrounds came together for a shared purpose—strengthening the neighborhoods where we live and work.
- completed touch up painting across 14,500 square feet across two floors at the LGBT Life Center in Norfolk. Volunteers also organized and cleared 4,500 square feet to support the Center’s housing, prevention, medical, community engagement, and administrative departments. Finally, they deep cleaned a 540-square foot pantry and sorted 45 boxes of food donations, improving efficiency in food preparation and distribution for those in need.

and cleaning floors, and reorganizing key areas of the store—improving efficiency and supporting ongoing funding for affordable housing initiative. - supported the Salvation Army of the Virginia Peninsula’s relocation by sorting, packing, and labeling essential items for an upcoming move, reducing the logistical burden on the organization and allowing services to resume to the community with minimum disruption. A total of 100 boxes were packed from five storage rooms and facilities spaces.
- served over 230 neighbors in need at SO ALL MAY EAT (SAME) program at Hampton Baptist Church by serving hot meals and distributing clothing and toiletries.
- wrapped approximately 350 gifts for youth in foster care in Hampton Roads, through The Friends of Foster Care in Norfolk. Volunteers completed 70+ birthday wish lists by organizing donated items into a shopping system and selecting gifts from inventory, ensuring every wish list was prepared and ready for distribution.
- sorted 707 pounds of food and distributed 2,397 pounds of food serving 43 families at the Virginia Peninsula’s first free grocery store, “The Market at THRIVE” for THRIVE Peninsula in Newport News.
- supported the horticulture team in raking leaves and enhancing the grounds, creating a welcoming and educational environment for thousands of visitors and promoting conservation awareness at the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News.
- packed and prepared 1080 boxes of food at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank in Hampton, totaling 34,560 lbs, which will provide 28,800 meals for seniors experiencing food insecurity. Volunteers also bagged produce for mobile pantries and sorted food for distribution to individuals and families in need across the Peninsula.
- prepped and painted two hallways and a storage office, revitalizing spaces that support individuals and families during domestic crises at the YWCA of South Hampton Roads. Colors were chosen to create a calm and welcoming space, with one hallway refreshed for a future mural. These updates enhanced shared and functional areas, fostering an environment of healing and hope.

This participation powerfully demonstrates our team’s commitment to making a positive difference both financially and socially in the communities we serve.”
